Waqar Younis PCB Role Finalizing the Appointment

Waqar Younis met with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Monday in Lahore to finalize the appointment. However, a few issues still need resolving, particularly regarding the nature of the role. Initially, Waqar Younis’ PCB role will start as a consultant and advisor to the chairman of cricket affairs.

This title might change to a more permanent designation similar to the role of Robert Key, the managing director at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This will solidify Waqar Younis’s PCB role in the cricketing hierarchy.

Responsibilities in Waqar Younis PCB Role

A board official stated that Naqvi is keen to appoint a former cricketer to take over all cricketing matters, leaving him to focus on running the board. Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has considerable demands on his time. 

With the busy season ahead for the Pakistan men’s team, including series against Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, and participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, the need for a dedicated cricketing head is paramount. Waqar Younis’ PCB role will be crucial in managing these tasks, ensuring all cricketing aspects are handled effectively.

Waqar Younis’ Experience with Pakistan Cricket

Waqar Younis has had multiple stints with the Pakistan team, serving as bowling coach and head coach. His last assignment was as a bowling coach under Misbah-ul-Haq’s regime after the 2019 World Cup. 

This new Waqar Younis PCB role will be the first time he takes on such a broad remit, including balancing the needs of Pakistan’s international schedule with the demand for their players in various T20 leagues worldwide. The Waqar Younis PCB role will leverage his vast experience and knowledge of the game.

Busy Season Ahead for Pakistan Cricket Team

The upcoming season will be one of the busiest for the Pakistan men’s team in recent years. They will face Bangladesh in a two-Test series in August, followed by three Tests against England in October. 

The team will travel to South Africa for two Tests over Christmas and New Year. After that, they will return to Pakistan for a Test series against West Indies. Following the Test series, they will participate in a triangular ODI series with South Africa and New Zealand.

The season will also include the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and an eight-match white-ball series in New Zealand in March 2025. Managing this schedule will be a significant part of Waqar Younis’ PCB role, demanding his expertise and strategic planning.

Expanded Domestic Cricket Schedule

In addition to the international fixtures, a newly expanded domestic schedule will feature three tournaments, one for each format, alongside the PSL. Overseeing this will also fall under Waqar Younis’ PCB role. The expanded role of Waqar Younis at PCB ensures that both international and domestic cricketing activities are streamlined and well-managed.
